The Economic and Social Council

The Economic and Social Council, acting under the overall supervision of the General Assembly and coordinates the activities of the United Nations and its agencies in the economic and social fields. As the principal forum for discussing international economic and social problems and formulating policy recommendations in these areas, the Council plays an important role in strengthening international cooperation for development. He also consults with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), thereby maintaining a vital link between the United Nations and civil society. The Board is composed of 54 members elected by the General Assembly for three years. During the year the Council holds periodic meetings, meeting in July at its substantive session, during which high-level meeting discussed the major economic, social and humanitarian issues. Council's subsidiary bodies meet regularly and report to him. For example, the Human Rights Commission monitors the observance of human rights throughout the world. Other bodies involved in social development, women, crime prevention, combating drug addiction and sustainable development.
